Potato wart is a severe soil-borne disease caused by the chytrid fungus Synchytrium endobioticum. It is one of the most destructive potato diseases globally due to the extreme longevity of its resting spores. These spores can persist in the soil for up to 30 years or more, making it nearly impossible to eradicate once an area becomes contaminated.

The disease primarily affects the potato plant (Solanum tuberosum). While it is highly host-specific to cultivated potatoes, it can also infect several wild Solanaceous weed species. The pathogen specifically attacks the meristematic tissues of the tubers, stolons, and stem bases, causing rapid and abnormal cell division.
The primary symptom of potato wart is the formation of cauliflower-like galls or excrescences on the tubers and stem bases. These outgrowths are initially firm and light-colored but eventually turn dark brown or black and decompose. In severe cases, the entire tuber is replaced by a massive, foul-smelling gall, rendering the harvest completely unusable.
Environmental conditions such as cool, moist soil are ideal for the release of zoospores, which infect the plant tissues. The disease spreads primarily through the movement of infested soil, contaminated equipment, and the planting of infected seed potatoes. Because of its high persistence and potential for rapid spread, it is classified as a regulated quarantine pest in many countries.
Effective management focuses almost exclusively on prevention. Since there are no chemical treatments available to eliminate the fungus from the soil, the only viable strategy is the cultivation of resistant potato varieties. Farmers must strictly adhere to biosecurity protocols, including cleaning machinery between fields and avoiding the movement of soil or plant material from confirmed infested areas.
