Fusarium wilt is a devastating fungal disease caused by various species of the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum. As a classic example of vascular wilt, the fungus colonizes the plant's xylem, obstructing the flow of water and nutrients, which leads to permanent wilting and eventually death of the host plant.

The pathogen has a wide host range, attacking economically important crops such as tomatoes, cotton, bananas, legumes, and various ornamental plants. Fusarium wilt is considered one of the most destructive diseases worldwide, as it can cause complete crop failure if the environmental conditions favor the pathogen's rapid development.

Symptoms initially manifest as drooping or wilting of the younger leaves during the warmest part of the day, with recovery occurring at night. As the infection progresses, the leaves turn yellow, then brown and dry out. An internal examination of the main stem usually reveals a distinctive dark, reddish-brown discoloration of the vascular tissue.

The disease development is heavily dependent on soil temperature and moisture. Warm soil conditions (typically between 20°C and 30°C) and high humidity significantly accelerate the infection rate. The fungus survives in the soil for long periods as dormant structures called chlamydospores, making it extremely difficult to eradicate once established in a field.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Fusarium wilt. Key strategies include the use of disease-resistant cultivars, proper soil management, and the implementation of long-term crop rotation schemes. Furthermore, biological control agents such as Trichoderma species are increasingly used to protect root zones from fungal colonization.
