Botanically, it appears as a branched, yellow-to-brown stem growing above the ground. Below the surface, it forms haustoria, specialized organs that penetrate the root system of a crop to hijack its vascular system.
The plant has strict environmental needs, primarily the presence of host root exudates which trigger germination. These chemical signals ensure the parasite only develops when a potential host is nearby, maximizing its reproductive success.
Agricultural management relies on preventing the buildup of the seed bank in the soil. This includes deep plowing, cleaning machinery, and implementing long-term crop rotations to exhaust the broomrape seed bank in infested fields.
The parasite targets a wide range of economically important crops, including tobacco, tomatoes, hemp, and various legumes. By draining water and essential nutrients, it significantly reduces the vigor and biomass of the host plant.
