Evening primrose (Oenothera canovirens) is typically grown as a biennial plant. Sowing can be performed in early spring or late autumn; however, autumn sowing is generally preferred as it allows seeds to undergo natural stratification in the soil, leading to more uniform germination.
Because the seeds are very small, they should be sown at a shallow depth of approximately 0.5 to 1 cm. For commercial production, row spacing of 45–60 cm is recommended to ensure adequate space for the rosette stage and subsequent development of flowering stems.
The seeding rate is usually between 2 and 3 kilograms per hectare, depending on the purity and germination rate of the seeds. After sowing, it is crucial to roll the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact, which prevents the seeds from drying out in the upper soil layers.
During the first year, the crop focuses on forming a sturdy basal rosette and a deep root system. Active vegetative growth and the production of flowering stems occur during the second year, once the plant has successfully overwintered and accumulated sufficient energy reserves.
It is important to manage plant density effectively, avoiding overcrowding. Excessive density can lead to reduced light penetration and increased humidity, which may encourage the development of fungal diseases within the crop canopy.
Growing requirements
The crop thrives in well-drained, light-textured soils such as sandy loams. Heavy clay soils that are prone to crusting or waterlogging are unsuitable, as they can lead to root suffocation and poor crop establishment.
Evening primrose is a highly light-demanding plant and must be grown in open, sunny fields. Exposure to full sunlight is essential for maximizing the oil content in the seeds and ensuring robust growth during the flowering phase.
The plant demonstrates excellent winter hardiness once established, successfully surviving winter conditions after its first year of growth. However, protection from sudden temperature fluctuations during the initial germination phase is highly beneficial.
While the crop is moderately drought-tolerant, consistent soil moisture is required during the flowering and seed-setting stages. Supplemental irrigation during dry spells can significantly increase both the quantity and the quality of the seed yield.
A neutral to slightly acidic soil pH is ideal for evening primrose. On acidic soils, liming should be performed well in advance of planting to create an optimal environment for nutrient uptake and root development.

The primary economic value of the crop is the oil extracted from the seeds, which is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This substance is highly sought after by the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries for its health and skin benefits.
Yield potential is closely linked to the number of flowers produced by each plant. Providing proper mineral fertilization—especially phosphorus and potassium—during the second year of growth stimulates the development of productive floral parts.
Uneven ripening of seed capsules can limit total yield, as seeds in earlier-maturing capsules may shed before the main harvest. Utilizing desiccants can help standardize the ripening process and reduce harvesting losses.
Weed management remains the most significant factor in maintaining yields. Because the plant grows slowly during its first year, it is easily outcompeted by weeds, which necessitates early and effective weed control measures.
Main diseases and pests
Root rot is a major threat to the crop, particularly when soil moisture levels are excessive during the spring thaw. Selecting well-drained field sites is the most effective preventative measure against these infections.
Cutworms are among the most common insect pests, capable of damaging the foliage and stems of the young plants. Systemic insecticides may be used when pest populations exceed economic thresholds to prevent significant crop damage.
Aphids can infest the plant tips during the budding stage, causing stunted growth and poor flower development. Regular monitoring is essential to detect outbreaks early and apply corrective measures before the aphids cause severe stress.

Harvesting
Harvesting evening primrose requires precise timing, as the seed capsules mature unevenly. The ideal harvest time begins when the lower capsules turn brown and the seeds reach a deep, dark color characteristic of maturity.
Direct combining is possible with specific equipment adjustments designed to handle small seeds without cracking them. Proper settings of the combine's cylinder speed are critical to minimizing mechanical damage to the seeds.
Swathing, or windrowing, is a recommended practice in regions where the crop matures unevenly or where weather conditions during harvest are unpredictable. This allows the plants to dry down uniformly before the final threshing.
Immediately after harvest, the seeds must be cleaned of plant debris and impurities. Freshly harvested seeds are susceptible to heating if left in bulk, which can quickly degrade the quality of the oil and reduce seed viability.
Drying the seeds in a well-ventilated space or using a specialized dryer at temperatures below 40°C is necessary to reduce seed moisture to 8–9% for safe, long-term storage.
