Celosia is a heat-loving crop, therefore sowing in open ground is carried out only after stable warm weather is established, ensuring the risk of night frost is gone. The optimal time for sowing seeds for seedlings is late March or early April, which allows for blooming plants by mid-June.

Celosia seeds have good germination, but they require surface sowing without deep burial in the soil. For germination, containers should be covered with film and kept at a temperature of at least 20-22 degrees Celsius, providing regular ventilation of the substrate.
Seedling transplanting is performed into individual peat pots, as the crop is extremely sensitive to root system damage. It is important to provide the plants with maximum lighting immediately after the first shoots appear to prevent stem elongation.
Transplanting hardened seedlings to their permanent location is carried out when stable daytime temperatures reach above 18 degrees Celsius. A distance of 20 to 35 centimeters is maintained between plants, depending on the variety and bush habit.
For direct sowing into the ground, only wind-protected areas with well-warming soil are used. However, in moderate climate conditions, this method significantly delays the onset of the decorative blooming phase.
The plant belongs to the Amaranthaceae family and originates from the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and America. Due to its origin, Celosia is extremely demanding regarding light levels and prefers the most open, sunny areas.
The crop grows best in light, well-drained, and fertile loamy soils with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction. It is important to avoid moisture stagnation in the root zone, as this inevitably leads to the development of fungal pathogens.
Watering should be moderate but regular during the active growth period. In hot summer months, the water quantity is increased, but direct contact of moisture with the inflorescences should be avoided to prevent rotting.
Celosia is sensitive to an excess of fresh organic fertilizers, such as manure, which provoke excessive vegetative growth at the expense of flowering. Preference is given to complex mineral compositions with a reduced nitrogen content.
During agrotechnical maintenance, regular soil loosening and weed removal are performed. Mulching the rows helps maintain the necessary moisture level and prevents the surface layer of the soil from overheating.
The most dangerous pest for Celosia in greenhouses and open ground is aphids, which suck sap from young shoots and inflorescences. When pest colonies are detected, systemic insecticides should be applied.
If irrigation regimes are violated and ventilation is poor, plants are often affected by blackleg, especially at the seedling stage. To prevent this disease, it is important to avoid waterlogging and use a sterile substrate.
Under conditions of high humidity and stagnant air, infection by fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew or grey mold, is possible. Using copper-based fungicides or sulfur-containing preparations is effective for their control.
Spider mites can cause significant damage during dry periods with low air humidity. Regular inspection of the underside of the leaves allows for the timely detection of infestation centers and the necessary acaricide treatment.
Proper crop rotation and maintaining spacing during planting serve as the primary defense against the spread of infections. It is not recommended to plant this crop in areas where other members of the Amaranthaceae family were previously grown.
