Mendel tulips are early-flowering bulbous crops resulting from the hybridization of early single tulips and Darwin tulips. Planting in open ground is carried out in the autumn, ideally when the soil temperature at a depth of 10–15 cm drops to about +9...+10 degrees Celsius.

The optimal planting window is generally from mid-September to late October. It is crucial to plant early enough for root development to occur before the ground freezes, but late enough to prevent premature shoot growth.

Deep planting depends on the size of the bulb, typically requiring a depth of three times the bulb's height. This ensures stability and provides sufficient protection against fluctuating soil temperatures during the winter months.

After planting, applying a layer of mulch—such as straw or compost—is recommended. This protects the soil from erosion and helps maintain a more stable environment for the bulbs throughout the dormant season.

Site preparation is essential; ensure that the area is free from perennial weeds, as their roots can compete with the tulips for nutrients and space during the critical spring growth phase.

Growing requirements

These tulips require well-draining, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Waterlogged soil is the primary cause of bulb rot, so effective drainage is mandatory if the native soil is heavy clay.

Adequate sunlight is vital for the development of sturdy stems and vibrant petal colors. A location receiving full sun for at least 6–8 hours a day is ideal for the Mendel variety's growth.

Regular fertilization is key to producing high-quality blooms. Applying nitrogen-rich fertilizers in early spring stimulates leaf growth, while phosphorus and potassium are necessary to support flower bud formation.

Watering management involves maintaining consistent soil moisture during the active growing season. While the soil should never be dry, it must not remain soggy, as this promotes fungal growth around the bulb base.

Crop rotation is an essential agricultural practice for Mendel tulips. Moving the plants to a new area every few years prevents the buildup of soil-borne pathogens and ensures healthier bulb development in subsequent seasons.

Main diseases and pests

The most common disease affecting Mendel tulips is grey mold, which thrives in cool, humid spring weather. It damages leaves, stems, and petals, leading to reduced plant vigor and potential death of the bulb.

Fusarium wilt is another significant threat, causing the rot of roots and the basal plate. Plants infected with this fungus often appear stunted, show yellowing foliage, and fail to produce viable flowers.

Viral diseases, such as the tulip breaking virus, are particularly insidious. They cause irregular patterns of color on the petals and, since they cannot be cured, infected plants must be carefully removed and destroyed.

Pests like bulb mites can be highly destructive, feeding on the bulb tissue and creating wounds that facilitate the entry of rot-causing bacteria and fungi. Regular inspection and proper bulb storage are vital.

Integrated pest management strategies should include treating bulbs with fungicides before planting and maintaining strict garden hygiene to reduce the risk of infestation and disease transmission.

Harvesting

Harvesting should commence once the foliage has withered and turned yellow, which typically indicates that the bulb has completed its growth cycle and stored sufficient energy for the next season.

The typical harvest period occurs in early to mid-summer. Bulbs must be carefully lifted using garden forks to prevent mechanical injury, as any cut or bruise provides a point of entry for pathogens.

After lifting, the bulbs should be cleaned of soil and roots and left to dry in a shaded, well-ventilated location. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, which can damage the outer scales and cause desiccation.

Sorting and grading take place after the drying process. Removing diseased, damaged, or undersized bulbs ensures that only healthy material is stored for the following year's planting cycle.

Storage should occur in a cool, dry environment with good airflow. Gradually decreasing the storage temperature as autumn approaches helps prepare the bulbs for the next planting season and promotes successful re-establishment.
