Hybrids of Neoregelia concentrica and Neoregelia princeps belong to the Bromeliaceae family. These are tropical epiphytic or lithophytic perennials native to the Brazilian rainforests. They are highly valued by collectors for their striking rosette structure and the vivid coloration of their leaves during the flowering period.
Cultivation requires bright, indirect light to maintain leaf coloration and healthy growth. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so filtered light is preferred. The ideal temperature range is between +20°C and +25°C, ensuring the plants stay above +16°C during the winter months to avoid stress.
The substrate must be well-draining, loose, and slightly acidic. A mix of bark, peat, sphagnum moss, and charcoal provides the necessary aeration for the roots. A robust drainage layer at the bottom of the container is essential to prevent water stagnation in the root zone, which can lead to rapid decay.
The watering process is unique for these bromeliads: water should be poured directly into the central cup (tank) formed by the leaves. The soil itself should be kept only slightly moist. High humidity (60–80%) is crucial for health, necessitating frequent misting or the use of an automated humidifier.
These hybrids serve primarily ornamental purposes in indoor landscaping, greenhouses, and solariums. Because of their unique ability to retain water in their rosettes, they are perfect for decorative interior compositions and tropical-themed plant arrangements in both residential and professional environments.
Main diseases and pests
Common pests include scale insects, mealybugs, and spider mites. These can be managed through regular monitoring and the application of appropriate systemic insecticides. Physical removal with an alcohol-dipped swab is an effective measure for small infestations.
Fungal and bacterial rot are the main health risks, typically triggered by poor air circulation or leaving the central tank filled with water in low temperatures. To mitigate these risks, ensure the plant environment is well-ventilated and avoid water accumulation in the rosette when the plant is dormant.
