In agricultural settings, they thrive in climates with reliable moisture and protection from harsh, drying winds. Botanically, the yew is distinguished by its lack of cones. Instead, it produces seeds encased in a fleshy, bright red aril. The foliage consists of flattened, needle-like leaves that are soft to the touch. Their wood is exceptionally dense and resistant to decay, which historically led to its over-harvesting for bow making and high-quality cabinetry.
Cultivation requirements for yew include deep, fertile, and well-drained soils with a preference for alkaline conditions. They are sensitive to waterlogging, which can easily lead to root rot. Successful management involves regular pruning in early summer to maintain shape, along with adequate hydration during extended dry spells to prevent browning of the needles.
Beyond landscaping, the yew serves an important role in modern medicine as the source of taxanes, compounds vital for chemotherapy treatments. Common pests that affect the health of the plant include the yew gall midge and scale insects. Growers must monitor for these issues and apply appropriate horticultural oils or systemic insecticides to maintain plant vigor.
