The uniglumed spikerush (Eleocharis uniglumis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is widely recognized for its adaptability to wetland environments and its role in stabilizing riparian zones.
The plant features a creeping rhizome system that supports dense growth. Its stems are cylindrical and leafless, typically growing between 10 and 50 centimeters in height, with a single spikelet at the apex containing characteristic glumes.
Regarding soil and climate requirements, Eleocharis uniglumis thrives in moisture-saturated soils. It demonstrates a high tolerance for brackish conditions and nutrient-poor wetlands, making it a valuable species for ecological restoration projects.
The natural range of the species extends across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is particularly common in coastal marshes, wet meadows, and around the margins of ponds and lakes where the soil remains hydrated year-round.
