The carnation, belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family, is a perennial herbaceous plant resulting from the crossbreeding of Dianthus caryophyllus and Dianthus gratianopolitanus. Industrial cultivation typically begins with seed sowing in winter, usually between January and February, to ensure strong plant development.
Successful germination requires a high-quality substrate with a neutral pH, which must be disinfected to prevent fungal pathogens. The optimal temperature for germination is between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, maintained with consistent moisture levels to prevent the seeds from drying out.
Seedlings are pricked out after the development of the first two true leaves, which encourages a robust root system. Once the plants have been hardened off, they are transplanted into the field or greenhouse after the risk of spring frost has completely passed and temperatures have stabilized.
In greenhouse environments, spacing is critical to ensure proper air circulation for each plant. A standard density is usually between 20 and 30 plants per square meter, depending on the lighting conditions and the chosen stem training method to ensure high-quality flower production.
As a perennial crop, carnations require periodic renewal, as flowering performance naturally declines after three to four years. Commercial growers often propagate the most productive mother plants via cuttings to maintain both the vigor and the specific quality characteristics of the chosen cultivar.
Growing requirements
Carnations are highly demanding regarding light intensity; therefore, they should be grown in locations with maximum solar exposure. Insufficient light results in elongated stems, reduced structural strength, and duller flower colors, which lowers the commercial value of the crop.
Soil conditions are vital for healthy growth; the plants prefer light, loamy, or sandy soils with excellent drainage. Any waterlogging in the root zone is detrimental, as it quickly leads to root rot and other fungal diseases, effectively killing the plant population.
The soil pH should ideally range between 6.5 and 7.5. In more acidic soils, the plants grow slowly and become susceptible to specific diseases, so pre-planting liming is often necessary to provide a balanced growth environment.
Balanced mineral nutrition is required during the active growth phase, with a focus on phosphorus and potassium to support bud development. Nitrogen should be used sparingly after the initial growth phase, as excess nitrogen promotes excessive foliage at the expense of flower production.
Temperatures should remain moderate; while the crop is relatively cold-tolerant, it requires protection from severe winter frost. In greenhouse conditions, maintaining night temperatures between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius helps produce larger and more durable flower heads.
Main diseases and pests
The most serious threats to carnation crops include Fusarium wilt and Alternaria, which can cause significant yield losses if not managed correctly. These pathogens persist in the soil, making strict crop rotation an essential practice for any producer.
Pests like spider mites and thrips pose a significant risk, as they feed on cell sap, leading to leaf deformation and stunted bud growth. These injuries also act as entry points for viral infections, which can irreversibly damage the quality of the flowers.
Fungal disease control relies on preventive applications of systemic fungicides starting from the seedling stage. If infections appear, prompt removal of affected plants along with the surrounding soil is necessary to contain the spread of the pathogen throughout the facility.
An integrated pest management (IPM) approach includes the use of biological controls, such as beneficial insects, alongside sticky traps for constant monitoring. Chemical pesticides should be reserved as a last resort, applied only when pest populations exceed economic thresholds.
Maintaining a clean environment, including the sterilization of tools and regular weeding, is crucial. Proper ventilation within the greenhouse helps prevent high humidity, which is a major factor in the rapid spread of airborne fungal spores and various pests.
Harvesting
Harvesting is performed when the bud is fully formed and the petals are just beginning to unfold, ensuring the longest vase life for the consumer. The best time for cutting is early morning, when the plant tissues are fully turgid and have the highest moisture content.
It is essential to use a sharp, disinfected knife or shears for harvesting to prevent crushing the stem and spreading potential pathogens. Cuts should be made several nodes above the soil level to encourage the development of lateral shoots and a secondary flush of blooms.
Immediately after cutting, the stems should be placed in clean water or a hydrating floral solution to prevent dehydration. The harvested flowers are then moved to a cool room to stabilize their condition before grading and packaging for sale.
Grading is based on stem length, bud firmness, and the absence of mechanical damage or pest marks. A high-quality carnation must feature a rigid stem capable of supporting the flower head vertically and petals that are free from blemishes or discoloration.
Storage is possible for one to two weeks if kept in cold storage at temperatures between 2 and 5 degrees Celsius. Using professional post-harvest preservatives helps keep the water clean, prevents bacterial growth, and ensures optimal development of the buds after the flowers reach the final consumer.
