Sowing dates

Sowing wax begonia seeds begins in January or February to ensure the plants are well-established for the growing season. The seeds are extremely tiny, so they are sown on the surface of a moist, fine-textured substrate without being covered, as they require light to germinate.

To promote successful germination, the containers must be covered with plastic or glass to maintain a consistent environment with high humidity. Temperature should be kept between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius until the first seedlings emerge.

Pricking out the seedlings occurs once they develop two or three true leaves, which usually takes about six to eight weeks. Careful handling during this stage is essential to encourage the development of a healthy root system in individual pots or plug trays.

Hardening off the seedlings is a mandatory step before transplanting them outdoors. This process involves gradually exposing the plants to outdoor temperatures and light conditions over a period of two weeks to prevent transplant shock.

Transplanting should only be done after the risk of frost has passed. Wax begonias are highly sensitive to cold, and even minor temperature drops can significantly stunt their growth and flowering potential.

Growing requirements

Wax begonia, a member of the Begoniaceae family, thrives in locations with bright, indirect light. While it is a robust plant, it benefits from afternoon shade, especially in warmer climates where direct sunlight can scorch the foliage.

The soil must be well-draining, fertile, and slightly acidic. Proper drainage is the most critical requirement, as wax begonias are highly prone to root rot if they remain in waterlogged soil for any extended period.

Regular watering is necessary to keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated. It is best to water the base of the plant to prevent foliage damage and reduce the risk of developing fungal issues on the leaves.

Feeding the plants with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the active growing season promotes continuous blooming. High-phosphorus fertilizers are often preferred to enhance the intensity of flower production.

The ideal temperature range for these plants is between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius. When grown in containers or hanging baskets, the soil composition should include perlite or vermiculite to improve aeration and moisture retention.

Main diseases and pests

Powdery mildew is a common fungal disease that manifests as a white, powdery coating on the leaves, typically occurring in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Management includes applying fungicides and improving plant spacing.

Botrytis, or grey mold, affects the stems and leaves, particularly during periods of high humidity and fluctuating temperatures. Affected parts must be promptly removed, and the plant should be treated to prevent further spread.

Spider mites and aphids are the most frequent pests, feeding on sap and weakening the plant. Regular monitoring of the foliage and timely use of insecticides are effective strategies to keep these pests under control.

Root rot caused by pathogens such as Pythium is a serious threat often triggered by overwatering. Preventing this requires using sterilized potting mixes and allowing the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
