Unlike synthetic pesticides, mustard powder has no systemic effect and does not penetrate plant tissues. This makes it an ideal choice for short-term pest management, allowing for harvesting shortly after treatment without concerns about toxic residues.
When incorporated into the soil, mustard powder exhibits phytosanitary properties by inhibiting the development of certain soil-borne pathogens. It acts as a bio-antagonist, modifying the micro-environment in the root zone to suppress fungal growth.
The active substances undergo rapid biodegradation in the environment, leaving no harmful footprints in the soil. This attribute is highly valued in organic farming systems and home gardening where soil health is a priority.

For soil treatment against wireworms, dry powder is incorporated into the planting furrows during sowing or transplanting. The suggested application rate is approximately 30–50 grams per square meter of soil surface.
To control slugs, the powder is applied dry in a continuous strip or ring around the plants. Since moisture reduces its efficacy over time, applications must be repeated following rainfall or heavy irrigation to maintain the protective barrier.
The frequency of application depends on pest pressure and local weather. Typically, preventive treatments are repeated every 7–10 days or after any significant precipitation event that washes off the active agents.
The primary limitation of mustard powder is the high volatility of its active compounds. Exposure to intense sunlight and high temperatures leads to rapid loss of potency, necessitating frequent reapplication to ensure ongoing protection.
