Their primary function is to serve as surfactants, reducing the surface tension of water droplets. This allows the spray to spread more evenly over the leaf surface, creating a continuous film instead of bouncing off or forming isolated droplets.

Many adjuvants act as penetrants, breaking down the waxy cuticle of plant leaves. This significantly increases the uptake of systemic pesticides, ensuring the active ingredient reaches the plant's vascular system quickly and efficiently.

Adjuvants also function as evaporation reducers, extending the time the pesticide remains in a liquid state on the leaf surface. This is vital for absorption in dry or windy conditions where rapid drying would otherwise render the treatment ineffective.

Furthermore, these substances act as compatibility agents in complex tank mixes, preventing the stratification or precipitation of various pesticides mixed together in the spray tank.

What it targets

Adjuvants are widely used with herbicides to control weeds with waxy or hairy leaves, such as lambsquarters or sowthistle, which are notoriously difficult to wet with plain water solutions.

They are essential for improving the efficacy of contact insecticides, ensuring that the spray covers the underside of leaves and penetrates tight crevices where pests tend to hide and thrive.

In fungicide applications, adjuvants help the active ingredients move into the leaf tissues, providing better protection against internal pathogens and improving the overall control of crop diseases.

The use of these agents is standard practice in the cultivation of leafy vegetables, sugar beets, and pulses, where natural leaf coatings often prevent standard spray solutions from adhering effectively.

Adjuvants are also applied during chemical desiccation, enabling a faster and more uniform drying of crops like wheat or sunflower, which is crucial for efficient harvesting operations.

Rates and timing

Application rates vary depending on the specific chemistry of the adjuvant and the pesticide label instructions. Typical rates range from 0.05% to 0.2% v/v, but some formulations may require specific volumes per hectare.

Timing is strictly linked to the pesticide application. The adjuvant should be added to the spray tank as per the sequence recommended by the pesticide manufacturer, usually after the primary pesticide has been diluted.

Constant agitation is required when using adjuvants to ensure a homogeneous mix throughout the application process, preventing any separation of components within the tank.

For operations involving hard water, certain adjuvants are formulated to mitigate the negative effects of calcium or magnesium ions, which would otherwise deactivate the pesticide.

Correct dosage is essential. Excessive use can lead to unintended phytotoxicity or leave too much residue, while under-dosing will fail to provide the desired boost in performance.

Restrictions

A compatibility test is mandatory before mixing adjuvants with multiple pesticides. If any foaming, precipitation, or heavy clouding occurs, the mixture should not be used in the field.

Application should be avoided during extreme heat or drought stress. Adjuvants increase the absorption of chemicals; therefore, under high temperatures, they can significantly increase the risk of crop damage.

Operators must take care to avoid overlapping sprays. Increased penetration and absorption caused by the adjuvant can lead to localized "hot spots" of chemical concentration that may kill or severely stunt crop plants.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary during handling and mixing, as surfactants can cause skin and eye irritation. Adherence to safety protocols is required to prevent accidental exposure.

Storage must be in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain the chemical integrity of the adjuvant, as extreme temperatures can cause the breakdown of active surfactants.
