Description

Mode of action

Florasulam belongs to the triazolopyrimidine chemical class and acts as a systemic herbicide. Its primary mechanism involves inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS) in susceptible plant species.

Blocking this enzyme leads to the immediate cessation of cell division and stops the growth of weeds. Due to its systemic properties, the active ingredient translocates quickly through the phloem and xylem to growth points.

The first visual signs of weed suppression appear within 1 to 3 days after application. Complete control of undesirable vegetation is achieved within 2 to 3 weeks, depending on environmental conditions and growth stages.

The herbicide is highly selective, allowing for safe application on cereal crops. These crops can quickly metabolize and detoxify the active substance, ensuring no negative impact on development.

Florasulam is frequently used in tank mixtures as it complements other herbicides like 2,4-D or sulfonylureas, enhancing overall control of over-matured or resistant weed populations.

What it targets

This active ingredient is specifically designed to manage a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds in cereal and maize crops.

It is particularly effective against highly problematic weeds such as Galium aparine (cleavers), various chamomile species, Amaranthus, and shepherd's purse.

Florasulam provides excellent results in controlling Polygonum species and Chenopodium album (lambsquarters) during the early spring season.

It is capable of controlling weed biotypes that have developed resistance to other herbicide classes, such as synthetic auxins or certain sulfonylureas.

The low dosage requirements make Florasulam a cost-effective solution for high-efficiency crop protection programs.

Rates and timing

Application rates typically range from 5 to 7.5 grams of active ingredient per hectare, depending on the specific formulation and weed spectrum present.

The optimal application timing is during the active growth phase of weeds, ideally when they are at the cotyledon to 2–4 leaf stage.

Spraying should occur when weeds are actively photosynthesizing to ensure maximum uptake and translocation of the chemical throughout the plant tissues.

The effective temperature range for application is quite broad, allowing for success at temperatures as low as +5°C to +8°C.

The product shows good rainfastness, as it is generally absorbed by the plant foliage within one hour after the application process.

Restrictions

Proper crop rotation management is essential, as Florasulam maintains some residual soil activity, although it degrades rapidly in microbiologically active soils.

Treatment should be avoided if crops are under stress due to drought, freezing temperatures, or heavy pest infestation.

Do not mix with organophosphate insecticides, as this combination can increase the risk of phytotoxicity in cereal crops.

Strict precautions must be taken to prevent spray drift to neighboring sensitive crops such as sugar beets, oilseed rape, or sunflowers.

Always utilize appropriate personal protective equipment during handling and application to minimize the risk of skin or eye contact with the chemical.
