As a systemic herbicide, Triathlon acts by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme. Blocking this enzyme stops the biosynthesis of essential amino acids: valine, leucine, and isoleucine. Consequently, cell division in the meristematic tissues of the weed ceases just hours after application. Visible symptoms, such as chlorosis and necrosis, appear within 5–7 days, with complete weed mortality achieved in 2–3 weeks.
