These fish primarily damage crops that are integrated into recirculating aquaculture systems, such as leafy greens, lettuce, herbs, and early-stage vegetable seedlings. The roots of these plants, which are constantly submerged in nutrient-rich water, become a target for foraging fish when artificial food sources are insufficient.
Biologically, many Cyprinids are opportunistic omnivores. Their developmental cycle involves active foraging, and if their nutritional requirements are not met through standard feeds, they naturally turn to aquatic vegetation and root systems. This behavior is intensified during the fry and juvenile stages of the fish life cycle.
The damage caused is characterized by the consumption of root hairs, peeling of the epidermal layers, and occasionally severing of the main root system. This herbivory significantly reduces the plant's ability to absorb nutrients, leading to stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms, and potential pathogen entry points in the root zone.
Protective measures are essential to ensure the success of a combined system. Strategies include:
- Physical isolation using protective netting around the roots;
- Providing high-quality, frequent supplementary feeding for the fish;
- Maintaining optimal stocking densities to reduce competitive stress;
