The larvae are white or cream-colored, featuring a cylindrical body shape. They spend their entire developmental phase feeding inside fruit tissues, which effectively shields them from many environmental factors.

Pupation usually occurs either inside the infested fruit or in the substrate nearby. The pupal case is robust and provides a protective layer during the fly's transformation, ensuring high survival rates.

What it damages

This pest is a significant polyphage that threatens a wide range of fruit and berry crops. It primarily targets fleshy fruits, particularly those with thin skin, making them vulnerable to infestation.

Host crops include grapes, peaches, nectarines, figs, citrus, and various berry bushes. The fly also readily infests fallen fruit on the ground, creating a reservoir for continuous population growth.

The female damages fruit by inserting her ovipositor under the skin to lay eggs. This action creates entry wounds that become gateways for secondary infections, including fungal rots and various bacteria.
