The adult beetle is characterized by an oval shape and a dark brown to black coloration, often displaying a subtle metallic sheen. The elytra are punctate, which serves as a primary morphological feature for precise identification under magnification.

The larval stage, which develops within plant tissues, is worm-like and pale in color. These larvae possess specialized mandibles adapted for mining into the reproductive organs of host plants, causing internal tissue destruction.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Depending on environmental conditions, the pest may complete one or more generations per season, influencing the intensity of the infestation.

This species is highly specialized, primarily associated with plants of the Brassicaceae family. Adults are commonly found hidden within inflorescences, where they seek both shelter and essential nutrients from the developing flower buds.

What it damages

Premature abscission (dropping) of flower buds is a key indicator of activity. If a field shows widespread bud drop without clear meteorological causes, it is necessary to examine the remaining buds for signs of feeding.

Deformed flower stalks, often appearing twisted or prematurely senescent, suggest the presence of larvae tunneling inside. These structural changes are typically accompanied by discoloration of the affected plant parts.

In highly infested fields, the flowering period may become asynchronous and sparse. The density of pods on the main raceme is usually significantly lower than what is expected for healthy, unaffected plants.

Visible frass within the buds is a definitive sign of feeding activity. Collectors should also look for the beetles themselves when tapping inflorescences over a white background, which is a standard monitoring practice.

Control measures

Crop rotation is the cornerstone of managing Xenostrongylus deyrollei. By avoiding the cultivation of brassica species in the same field for at least three to four years, the pest population density can be kept under control.

Effective weed management is essential. Destroying cruciferous weeds such as wild mustard and shepherd's purse eliminates alternative hosts and breeding sites, significantly reducing the pest pressure on main crops.

Chemical control should be implemented based on established economic injury levels. Timely application of insecticides, while considering the safety of pollinators and beneficial insects, is crucial for effective management.

Monitoring using yellow sticky traps or pheromone traps helps in detecting the arrival of adult beetles. Early detection allows for more precise and timely interventions, reducing the overall reliance on broad-spectrum pesticides.

Post-harvest management, including the deep incorporation of crop residues, helps disrupt the life cycle of the pest by destroying larvae or pupae overwintering in the soil and plant debris.
