How to identify

Scaptomyza terminalis is a small dipteran insect belonging to the Drosophilidae family. Adult flies are typically 2-3 mm long, with a greyish or yellowish appearance, making them inconspicuous in the field.

The larvae are legless, white, and worm-like, specifically adapted for feeding inside the leaf tissue. This stage of the life cycle is entirely internal, providing the larvae with protection from environmental factors and some predators.

The insect goes through four developmental stages: egg, larva (three instars), pupa, and adult. The lifecycle length depends heavily on ambient temperature and host plant quality, often allowing several generations per season.

The female fly utilizes an ovipositor to insert eggs into the mesophyll of the host plant leaves. This precision ensures that newly hatched larvae have immediate access to food resources.

Pupation typically occurs within the leaf mine or, in some cases, in the soil layer, which allows the species to survive under various agricultural conditions.

What it damages

Scaptomyza terminalis is a specialist herbivore that primarily targets plants within the Brassicaceae family. Its host range includes common vegetables such as radish, cabbage, mustard, and arugula.

The larvae consume the internal leaf tissue (mesophyll), creating tunnels known as mines. This feeding behavior destroys the chlorophyll-containing layers, which inhibits the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently.

While often considered a minor pest, high population density can lead to severe economic losses for salad green producers, where the visual appearance of the leaves is of primary importance.

Damage symptoms often start on the lower, older leaves and can progress upwards, causing significant stress to the plant and reducing the total yield of commercial produce.

Weakened plants are prone to additional stress, including secondary infections by bacterial pathogens that enter through the exit holes or damaged leaf tissues, potentially leading to plant rot.

Signs of infestation

In seedlings or young plants, heavy mining can lead to stunted growth, distortion of the leaf shape, and in extreme cases, the total collapse of the seedling's canopy.
