The Bean pyralid (Psara ambitalis) is a moth species belonging to the family Crambidae within the order Lepidoptera. It is a nocturnal insect that often goes unnoticed in field conditions.
The adult moth has a wingspan of approximately 18 to 22 mm. Its wings feature a greyish-brown coloration with darker bands, providing excellent camouflage against dry plant debris and soil.
The larvae, or caterpillars, pass through several developmental stages, growing up to 20 mm in length. They typically exhibit yellowish-green to brownish bodies with distinct sclerotized spots.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering occurs primarily in the pupal stage within the upper layer of soil or crop residues.
