Riabov's bush-cricket (Poecilimon riabovi) belongs to the Tettigoniidae family within the Orthoptera order. This insect is characterized by an elongated body, typically colored in shades of green or brown, which provides excellent camouflage within thick vegetation.

Females of this species are easily identified by their sabre-shaped ovipositor, which features serrated edges resembling a small saw, which is the source of the common name "saw-tail" or "bush-cricket" in some regions.

Their wings are highly reduced and are mostly hidden under the pronotum. Consequently, they are flightless and rely primarily on jumping as their main mode of transport, limiting their natural spread to shorter distances.

Nymphs resemble smaller versions of the adults but lack developed reproductive organs. They go through several growth stages, molting as they increase in size and progressively developing adult features.

This species is a typical inhabitant of steppe and meadow ecosystems. They prefer areas with dense grass cover, which provides both necessary shelter from predators and sufficient nutrition throughout their active life cycle.

What it damages

As a polyphagous insect, Poecilimon riabovi feeds on a wide range of plant species. It poses a particular threat to cereal grains, legumes, and various green forage crops grown in its natural habitat range.

Signs of infestation

The primary sign of infestation is the appearance of irregularly shaped, ragged holes in the leaves of crops. Unlike some caterpillars that eat leaves cleanly, bush-crickets leave messy, uneven edges.

Early morning or late evening is the best time to perform field inspections, as the insects are more stationary. Finding the crickets on stems or lower leaves confirms their presence in the field.

Auditory signs, specifically the chirping sound made by males, are a strong indicator of a high population density. If this sound is heard across the field, it is time to initiate a formal pest monitoring program.

Fecal deposits found on the leaves or at the base of plants serve as secondary confirmation of pest activity. Consistent accumulation of these pellets indicates a well-established colony of bush-crickets.

Field margins and areas bordering grasslands should be monitored most closely. Infestations often begin in these peripheral zones before spreading inward, making early detection at the borders crucial for containment.

Control measures

Cultural control measures focus on removing weeds and overgrown vegetation from field margins and fence lines. This reduces the primary habitat and food source for the insects, discouraging them from nesting nearby.

Deep autumn plowing is a highly effective mechanical control method. By turning the soil, many overwintering eggs are either buried too deep to hatch or exposed to harsh weather, significantly reducing the next generation's population.

Chemical control should only be used when economic damage thresholds are exceeded. Contact and stomach-action insecticides are effective, and applications should be timed to target early nymphal stages for maximum impact.

Implementing crop rotation disrupts the life cycle of the pest, making fields less attractive for colonization. Sustainable farming practices that encourage the presence of natural predators also help keep population numbers in check.
