The Oak Nycteola (Nycteola revayana) is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. Despite the common name sometimes confusing it with Tortricidae due to its leaf-rolling behavior, this insect is biologically distinct.
The adult moth has a wingspan of 18–25 mm. Its forewings exhibit a mottled grey or brownish pattern, which acts as effective camouflage, allowing it to blend seamlessly with tree bark when resting during the day.
The larvae are cylindrical, light green in color, and possess small dark warts covered with fine hairs. They are agile and tend to hide within rolled leaves, anchored by silk threads produced by the caterpillar itself.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, including stages of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect usually undergoes one or two generations per year, depending on the local climate and temperature conditions.
Overwintering occurs at the adult stage; the moths find refuge in bark crevices, hollows, or leaf litter. Once spring temperatures rise, they emerge to mate and begin the cycle for the new season.
What it damages

Light trapping during evening hours can confirm the presence of adult moths in the area. Monitoring these trends helps researchers and foresters estimate the potential risk for the upcoming generation.
Control measures
Biological control using formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis is highly effective against young larvae while remaining safe for non-target species, making it a preferred choice for sustainable forest management.
Chemical control may be necessary during severe outbreaks. Systemic or contact insecticides should be applied precisely when larvae emerge, ensuring that environmental impact is minimized and label instructions are followed.
Good silvicultural practices, such as removing weakened or dead branches, help reduce the available habitat for the moths. Clearing leaf litter in late autumn can also decrease the number of successful overwintering adults.
Encouraging biodiversity by providing habitats for insectivorous birds and predatory wasps can create a natural balance, keeping the Nycteola population below the threshold of economic damage.
