Lemyra infernalis

Lemyra infernalis is a moth species belonging to the Erebidae family and the Arctiinae subfamily. Known colloquially as part of the tiger moth group, this insect is primarily distributed across parts of East Asia, where it interacts with various ecosystem types, occasionally becoming a nuisance in cultivated landscapes.

As a polyphagous pest, Lemyra infernalis affects a broad range of plant hosts. It frequently targets economically important shrubs, trees, and vegetables. By feeding on the foliage, the larvae disrupt the metabolic processes of the plants, leading to weakened growth and a significant reduction in biomass production.

The life cycle of this moth follows the typical holometabolous development, progressing through the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larval stage is the most destructive period, during which the caterpillars undergo several instars, consuming large quantities of plant tissue to fuel their rapid growth before pupation.

Damage symptoms often include extensive leaf skeletonization, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic area. In severe infestations, the cumulative feeding activity can lead to complete defoliation, which severely stresses the plant and compromises fruit or vegetable development, resulting in substantial financial loss for growers.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is highly recommended, utilizing mechanical controls such as light traps to reduce adult populations and biological control agents to manage larval stages.
