Termopsidae

Termopsidae are a family of primitive insects belonging to the order Blattodea, suborder Isoptera (termites). Often referred to as dampwood termites, they are characterized by their simple social structure and the fact that they live and feed exclusively within the wood they inhabit, rather than building separate nests in the soil.

These pests primarily infest dead and decaying wood, including stumps, fallen logs, and structural timber in buildings. In agricultural settings, they can cause significant damage to wooden storage facilities, barns, and fencing, particularly when the wood has high moisture content or is in contact with the ground.

The biology of Termopsidae centers on a life cycle that includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Unlike more advanced termite species, they do not possess a true worker caste. Instead, they rely on pseudergates (false workers) which are immature individuals that perform colony labor and are capable of molting into other forms, allowing the colony to be highly resilient and adaptive.

The damage caused by these insects is often extensive but remains hidden until significant structural failure occurs. They create large, irregular galleries within the wood, eating out the soft spring wood and leaving the harder summer wood layers. Because they do not deposit mud tubes on the exterior like subterranean termites, infestations can remain undetected for years until the wood becomes brittle and hollow.

Effective management and protection against Termopsidae require a combination of preventative building practices and chemical intervention:

  • Reducing wood moisture by improving ventilation and fixing plumbing or roof leaks.
  • Removing wood-to-soil contact for all structural elements of agricultural buildings.
  • Applying borate-based wood preservatives which provide long-term protection against wood-boring insects.
  • Inspecting timber structures annually for signs of frass or internal hollows.
