Salamandridae

Salamandridae prefer humid environments, typically residing near water bodies, deep shade, or dense vegetation. Their biology requires constant moisture to support their skin respiration. During their nocturnal hunting, they can occasionally disturb soil surfaces or trample seedlings, which is often misinterpreted as pest damage by growers who overlook the actual culprit.

Their life cycle includes an aquatic larval stage followed by a terrestrial or semi-aquatic adult phase. Reproduction is linked to aquatic environments where eggs are laid. Because their diet consists primarily of slugs, snails, and various insects, they perform a significant service by suppressing pest populations that would otherwise cause substantial economic loss to the farmer.

The perceived harmfulness of Salamandridae is largely related to physical disturbances in greenhouse environments or seedbeds. They can disrupt mulch layers or inadvertently injure young sprouts while seeking shelter or food. However, they lack the mouthparts necessary for herbivory, making them biologically incapable of feeding on plant tissues.
