Systematically, Mytilidae belong to the order Mytilida. They are aquatic invertebrates that thrive in marine or estuarine environments. The biology and life cycle of Mytilidae are strictly bound to aquatic ecosystems. They are filter feeders that rely on phytoplankton and organic particles suspended in water. Their life cycle includes larval stages (veligers) that develop in the water column before settling on hard surfaces.
