The biology of Linognathidae is characterized by an obligate life cycle on the host. Females deposit eggs, known as nits, which are cemented firmly to the hair shafts. The development cycle includes three nymphal stages, all of which require frequent blood meals, making the parasite population grow rapidly under crowded housing conditions.

The damage caused by these lice stems from their piercing-sucking mouthparts. They pierce the skin to feed on blood, which induces intense irritation and pruritus. Affected animals often display restless behavior, rubbing against structures, which leads to hair loss, dermatitis, excoriation, and increased susceptibility to secondary skin infections.

Economically, the presence of these lice causes significant losses. Infested animals often suffer from anemia, reduced weight gain, and diminished milk production. The chronic stress caused by the constant itching and pain prevents the animals from resting properly, which directly affects their immune system and overall vitality.
