Systematically, the family Liviidae is classified under the superfamily Psylloidea. Adult psyllids have strong hind legs designed for jumping and wings that are held roof-like over their bodies. They possess a specialized stylet for penetrating plant tissue to access the vascular system, effectively draining energy from the host plant.

The life cycle of psyllids typically consists of the egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Many species are monophagous, meaning they depend on specific host plant species to complete their development. Overwintering usually occurs in the adult stage, often protected by tree bark crevices or evergreen foliage until favorable spring temperatures trigger activity.

The damage caused by psyllids is dual-natured: direct damage from sap-feeding and indirect damage from phytotoxins injected during feeding. This leads to leaf curling, stunted growth, and yellowing. Furthermore, the excretion of large amounts of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which physically blocks sunlight and impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
