Derbidae
Systematic position. Derbidae is a family of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha. These insects are classified as planthoppers and comprise numerous species, many of which are known for their distinct morphological features, such as elongated wings and specialized mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking.

Susceptible crops. Derbidae primarily affect a variety of tropical and subtropical plants. Major crops at risk include coconut and oil palms, bananas, cacao, and various citrus species. Their presence is particularly noted in plantations where dense foliage and high humidity provide ideal conditions for their establishment.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of three main stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Unlike many other planthoppers, Derbidae nymphs are largely saprophagous or fungivorous, living in decaying wood, organic litter, or under bark. Adults emerge and migrate to the foliage to feed on plant sap, often being more active during warm and humid seasons.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. The primary injury is caused by adults feeding on sap, which depletes the plant's resources. Frequent feeding can lead to yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and reduced fruit set. Beyond direct mechanical damage, they are recognized as vectors for various plant pathogens, including mycoplasma-like organisms, which can cause lethal systemic diseases in crops.
Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:
- Sanitation practices, such as removing rotting logs and organic debris where nymphs develop.
- Monitoring using sticky traps to determine population peaks.
- Application of selective insecticides if thresholds are exceeded.
- Promoting natural predators that inhabit the plantation environment to help maintain low pest numbers.
