A distinct sour or fermented smell emanating from the fruit canopy is a strong indicator of a widespread Drosophila infestation, as flies are attracted to the volatiles produced by rotting fruit.

Premature fruit drop, where berries fall from the plant while still seemingly unripe, is a clinical sign that larvae have been feeding inside the fruit and disrupted its normal physiology.

Visual observation of small flies clustering around overripe fruit in the evening is a sure sign of infestation. Growers should inspect fruit directly under the canopy to identify early symptoms.

Control measures

Effective management begins with strict sanitation. Removing and destroying all overripe and fallen fruit is essential to break the breeding cycle and reduce local population pressure.

  • Use fine-mesh netting to exclude flies from berry patches.
  • Deploy bait traps containing vinegar or wine to monitor and reduce adult numbers.

Biological control, including the use of entomopathogenic fungi or natural predators, offers a sustainable alternative for long-term suppression of the pest in both organic and conventional systems.
