Description
How to identify
The tusk (Brosme brosme), also known as cusk, is a marine fish belonging to the Gadidae family within the order Gadiformes. It is a bottom-dwelling species native to the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.
The species is physically distinct due to its single long dorsal fin that merges with the caudal and anal fins, creating a continuous fringe around the posterior part of the fish's body.
Physically, the tusk has a robust, elongated body covered in small scales, a large head with a single chin barbel, and strong jaws equipped with sharp teeth adapted for a predatory lifestyle.
Coloration in tusk specimens varies significantly, ranging from reddish-brown to dark gray or even blackish on the back, while the ventral side is usually lighter, providing camouflage against the ocean floor.
Tusk are primarily found at depths ranging from 100 to 1,000 meters. They prefer rocky or gravelly substrates, where they hide in crevices to ambush prey, including crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish.
