How to identify

Loose smut is caused by the fungus Ustilago nuda, a basidiomycete pathogen. It is a highly specific parasite that attacks barley crops, completing its cycle within the plant's tissues.

The fungus survives as dormant mycelium within the embryo of the barley seed. Because it is an internal infection, healthy-looking seeds may carry the pathogen, making visual inspection ineffective.

The infection process occurs during the flowering stage. Teliospores are dispersed by wind and land on the florets, where they germinate and colonize the developing grain.

Once the infected seed is planted, the dormant mycelium resumes growth alongside the sprouting embryo. The fungus grows systemically through the barley plant as it develops.

By the time the head emerges, the mycelium replaces the entire structure of the spike with a mass of dark, powdery spores that are easily spread by the air.

What it damages

Loose smut causes total loss of grain in the affected ears. The fungus converts the floral parts of the plant into a mass of spores, resulting in 100% yield reduction for every infected tiller.

The most distinctive symptom appears upon heading, when the head emerges covered in a black, dusty mass of spores, initially protected by a thin membrane.

After the membrane ruptures, the spores are blown away, leaving only the bare rachis visible. This characteristic look makes the disease easily identifiable in the field.

Beyond individual tiller loss, the presence of the disease decreases overall crop vigor and seed germination rates in the subsequent planting season.

Economic damage is significant because infected seeds cannot be used for future plantings without undergoing thorough chemical treatments to eliminate the internal mycelium.

Control measures

The primary control measure is the use of systemic fungicides applied as seed treatments. These chemicals penetrate the seed coat to eradicate the mycelium within the embryo.

Selecting certified, disease-free seed from reliable suppliers is critical for preventing the introduction of the pathogen into new field areas.

Planting resistant barley varieties is the most sustainable long-term strategy for minimizing the impact of loose smut in large-scale agriculture.

Maintaining spatial isolation between seed multiplication fields and commercial grain fields helps reduce cross-pollination and spore transmission during the flowering stage.

  • Apply systemic fungicide seed dressings before sowing.
  • Source seed only from crops inspected and cleared of smut.
