Phthirusa is a genus of semi-parasitic plants belonging to the family Loranthaceae. These plants are commonly known as mistletoe relatives and often colonize the branches of woody species in tropical and subtropical climates.

As hemiparasites, they possess green leaves and perform photosynthesis, yet they rely on a host plant for essential water and mineral nutrients. This is achieved through the formation of haustoria, specialized root-like structures.

The haustorium invades the xylem of the host plant, creating a vascular connection. This connection allows the parasite to extract sap directly from the host's conductive tissues, weakening the tree over time.

There are numerous species within the genus, many of which are geographically restricted. They are recognized by their characteristic bushy appearance within the host's crown, often forming dense, dark green clusters.

Identification is usually confirmed by observing these clusters throughout the year, especially when the parasite produces flowers or berries, which are distinct from the host's botanical features.

Early detection is crucial. Regular monitoring of the canopy, especially during the off-season when the parasite is easier to spot against bare branches, allows for prompt intervention.

Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization, irrigation, and pest management helps the host better tolerate the presence of minor infestations, though it does not prevent them.

In plantation management, removing highly infected trees may be necessary to serve as a quarantine measure, preventing the further spread of seeds throughout the orchard.
