Peach latent mosaic viroid (PLMVd) is a small, single-stranded circular RNA molecule that acts as a serious pathogen in stone fruit species. It belongs to the Pelamoviroid genus and the Avsunviroidae family.

Unlike conventional viruses, this viroid lacks a protein capsid, making it a highly resilient infectious agent that replicates within the host's plant cells using their machinery.

It is primarily transmitted through vegetative propagation methods, including budding, grafting, and the use of infected scions or rootstocks in nursery production.

Mechanical transmission is another critical route, where contaminated pruning tools carry the sap from infected trees to healthy ones during routine maintenance.

Because the pathogen can remain latent for years, it can spread throughout an entire orchard unnoticed until visual symptoms or diagnostic testing confirm its presence.

What it damages

The primary host for this pathogen is the peach tree (Prunus persica), but it also affects nectarines, apricots, plums, and various almond cultivars.

The viroid causes significant metabolic stress, leading to systemic infection that stunts tree growth and significantly impairs the overall physiological development.

Infection results in reduced fruit yield, poorer quality harvests, and physical deformities in the fruit, which often makes them unmarketable for commercial sale.

The longevity of infected trees is reduced as the plant's natural defenses are weakened, making them susceptible to secondary pests and environmental stressors.

In cases of severe infestation, the tree may show signs of decline, including dieback of branches and potential total collapse of the tree's structure.

Signs of infestation

Symptoms are highly variable depending on the host variety, with many trees remaining asymptomatic for a long period, which is why it is called "latent".

When symptoms appear, they typically include leaf mosaic, chlorotic spotting, and distorted leaf margins, which are often mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or pest damage.

Fruit symptoms are particularly destructive, often presenting as "mosaic" patterns on the skin, suture cracks, or irregular shapes that deviate from the cultivar's norm.

Some infected trees exhibit abnormal growth patterns, such as witches' broom formations, shortened internodes, and stunted, bushy appearances in specific branches.

In the spring, blossoms may display irregular color streaks or spots, signaling a deep-seated infection that affects pigment synthesis and cell structure.

Control measures

There are no curative chemical treatments or vaccines for infected trees; therefore, management must focus on strict phytosanitary prevention.

The most effective strategy is to use only certified, virus-free nursery stock that has been verified through molecular testing (RT-PCR) prior to planting.

Rigorous sanitation protocols must be followed, including the systematic sterilization of all pruning equipment using effective disinfectants like bleach or ethanol between trees.

Once an infected tree is identified, it should be promptly removed, pulled, and destroyed to eliminate the source of the pathogen from the orchard environment.
