This microscopic fungus acts as a significant plant pathogen, colonizing the vascular tissues of various woody plants and shrubs, leading to serious physiological disruption.
Often existing as an endophyte, the fungus remains latent within healthy plant tissues until host stress triggers the transition to an aggressive parasitic stage.
Identification is primarily based on the presence of small, dark, flask-shaped structures called pycnidia that break through the plant's epidermis.
The fungus spreads via conidia, which are disseminated by rain splash, wind, or insect vectors, effectively infecting the host through wounds and natural openings.
What it damages
Neofusicoccum ribis affects a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops, including currants, gooseberries, grapes, nut trees, and various fruit-bearing species.
