Nectria rigidiuscula is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the order Hypocreales. It is well-known in plant pathology for its role as a weak parasite that thrives on trees weakened by environmental or mechanical factors.
The fungus exhibits a dual life cycle. Its sexual state produces perithecia, which are small, orange-to-red fruiting bodies. Its asexual state is commonly known as Fusarium decemcellulare, a significant secondary pathogen.
The organism is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. It can survive in dead wood, plant debris, and even in the soil, making it a persistent threat to perennial crops like cacao.
Dissemination primarily occurs through airborne spores and rain splashes. The fungus requires specific moisture levels and entry points, such as wounds or existing lesions, to effectively colonize the host tissues.
Research indicates that the fungus can adapt to various substrates, highlighting the importance of sanitation in managing this pathogen in commercial plantation settings.
What it damages
The primary hosts for this pathogen include cacao trees, where it causes severe dieback and stem lesions. The fungus attacks the bark, cambium, and phloem, disrupting the movement of photosynthates.
Secondary damage includes the development of cankers that can eventually girdle entire branches. This leads to the total loss of the affected canopy parts and significantly reduced fruit production.
The weakened bark tissue serves as a substrate for a complex of secondary invaders, including other fungi and wood-boring insects, which exacerbate the degradation of the tree structure.
Young plants are particularly vulnerable, and infections can cause stunted growth or total plant mortality if the main stem becomes compromised by early necrosis.

Signs of infestation
