As a parasite, this fungus colonizes the living tissues of the host plant, specifically targeting the phloem and cambium layers. Its survival strategy depends on residing within the woody parts of the tree during dormant periods.

The biological life cycle of Monochaetia mali is synchronized with the physiological state of the tree. The fungus primarily invades through wounds created by environmental stresses, pruning, or insect activity, exploiting the weakened defense system.

Propagation is facilitated by the production of pycnidia, which release asexual spores (conidia). These spores are highly mobile and can be easily disseminated across an orchard by rain splashes, wind, and agricultural machinery.

Correct identification often requires microscopic analysis of the fruiting bodies found on affected bark. Distinguishing Monochaetia mali from other canker-causing fungi is crucial for selecting the appropriate management strategy.

What it damages

Wilting of foliage on individual branches is a secondary sign, reflecting the tree's inability to transport sufficient moisture due to the structural damage caused by the fungal cankers.

Under humid conditions, masses of spores may become visible on the surface of the cankers, appearing as slimy droplets or threads, which are a major source of secondary contamination.
