Microscopic analysis reveals that Monilinia azaleae produces conidia that are easily dispersed by wind and rain splash. These spores land on susceptible host tissues, such as emerging shoots and flower buds, initiating the infection cycle during cool and wet weather conditions.

The pathogen is highly host-specific, meaning it focuses its resources on infecting specific tissues of its host. The mycelium penetrates the plant cells and moves through the intercellular spaces, disrupting the plant's vascular function and causing rapid localized necrosis.

Understanding the biology of this pathogen is essential for effective disease management. Its ability to persist in the environment requires gardeners and growers to combine sanitation efforts with chemical interventions to break its reproductive cycle.

Good cultural practices, such as providing adequate spacing for airflow, help keep the plant foliage dry. Reduced moisture on the leaf surface is a major deterrent to spore germination and pathogen development.

Systemic fungicides are recommended when environmental conditions favor disease development. Preventive applications should be timed to coincide with bud break and the early stages of flowering for maximum protection.

Mulching the soil around the base of the bushes with clean material can create a barrier, preventing fungal spores from the soil from splashing up onto the lower branches during heavy rains.

Regular inspections throughout the spring are vital. By identifying and treating the first symptoms of blight, gardeners can prevent a localized issue from spreading throughout the entire landscape.
