Melanconis chartusiana

The fungus functions as both a parasite and a saprotroph. It colonizes the cortical tissues and the vascular cambium, effectively disrupting the tree's internal transport systems for water and nutrients.

The fungus is identifiable by the formation of stromatic structures (stromata) that erupt through the bark surface. These dark, slightly raised structures contain the perithecia where sexual spores (ascospores) are produced.

Dissemination primarily occurs through spores, which are spread by rain splashes and wind currents. The pathogen is highly active during cool, wet seasons, which facilitate the release and germination of spores on vulnerable tree surfaces.

Once established in a tree, the mycelium persists in the necrotic tissues, making it a recurring threat if sanitation is not consistently maintained in the orchard.

The primary host for Melanconis chartusiana is the English walnut (Juglans regia). The pathogen poses a significant risk to both young saplings and mature orchard trees, leading to severe branch dieback.

By attacking the phloem and cambium, the fungus creates lesions that girdle the branches, effectively cutting off the supply of carbohydrates and nutrients to the distal parts of the tree.

The cumulative damage leads to the gradual loss of the canopy. Over several growing seasons, heavily infected trees may lose entire scaffolds, significantly reducing their nut-bearing capacity and overall longevity.

In addition to branch loss, the pathogen can infect the main trunk, leading to perennial cankers. These wounds weaken the structural integrity of the tree and can eventually lead to tree mortality.

Economic losses are particularly high in neglected orchards or regions where poor management practices prevent the timely removal of infected wood, allowing the pathogen to build up high inoculum levels.

Early symptoms of infection include the appearance of darkened, sunken areas on the bark of small-to-medium-sized branches. These areas often appear water-soaked initially before turning necrotic.

Small, black, wart-like protrusions (stromata) appear on the surface of the affected bark. These structures serve as the fruiting bodies and are a key indicator for diagnosis by agronomists.

When the bark is scraped away, the underlying wood exhibits characteristic discoloration, showing a clear necrotic zone that is sharply delineated from the surrounding healthy green tissue.

Foliar wilting and yellowing on individual branches, even during the active growing season, are classic visual indicators of the underlying branch dieback caused by the fungal interruption of transport.

During periods of high humidity, the fungal fruiting bodies may exude spore masses as yellow or orange tendrils, which further confirms the presence of an active fungal infection.

The cornerstone of management is rigorous sanitation. All infected branches must be pruned out at least 15 cm below the visible necrosis and immediately burned or removed from the orchard to prevent secondary spread.

Tool disinfection is critical. Pruning shears and saws must be sterilized with 70% alcohol or a bleach solution between every tree to avoid spreading fungal spores from infected to healthy wood.

Applying copper-based fungicides during the dormant season (late autumn or early spring before bud break) provides a protective barrier and helps reduce the total inoculum load in the orchard.

Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and adequate irrigation is essential, as stressed trees are significantly more susceptible to infection and secondary colonization.
