Taxonomically, the virus is classified within the Betaflexiviridae family. It is a specialized pathogen that primarily infects plants of the Humulus genus, establishing a systemic infection that persists throughout the host's lifespan.

The primary host for this virus is the common hop, Humulus lupulus. The disease significantly impacts commercial hop yards by reducing cone yield and impairing the quality of essential oils and acids required for brewing.

Infection disrupts normal leaf physiology, leading to reduced lateral growth and the development of stunted inflorescences. Prolonged infection causes premature plant senescence and reduced longevity of the hop yard.

Symptoms are typically most apparent during the early spring growth phase when plants are actively producing foliage. Throughout the growing season, the virus spreads within the plantation through insect vectors.

The primary vector for HMV is the hop aphid, Phorodon humuli. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy tissue during their migration within the field.

Characteristic symptoms include the appearance of light green or yellow mosaic patterns and chlorotic spotting on leaves. Leaf distortion and curling are common, often resulting in an asymmetric leaf shape.

Susceptible hop cultivars often display shortened internodes, leading to a bushy or stunted growth habit. The cones produced by infected plants are often undersized, deformed, and of inferior quality for commercial use.

The most effective strategy is the use of virus-indexed, certified planting material derived from tissue culture. Ensuring that new plantings are free of HMV is crucial for long-term plantation health.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) focusing on the control of the hop aphid (Phorodon humuli) is essential to minimize the secondary spread of the virus within the field during the growing season.

Sanitation practices, such as the rogueing and destruction of infected plants, remain a critical control measure to prevent the buildup of viral inoculum in the vicinity of healthy plants.
