How to identify

The causal agent of rose scab is the ascomycetous fungus Elsinoe rosarum (synonym Sphaceloma rosarum). It belongs to the order Dothideales and is a specialized pathogen targeting ornamental rose varieties.

The fungus overwinters as mycelium or conidial stroma in fallen leaves, infected stem lesions, and bark crevices. In spring, when environmental conditions become suitable, it produces conidia that are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, or insects.

The life cycle is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. Optimal infection occurs during mild, wet weather, as the fungus requires a film of water on the plant surface to germinate and penetrate the epidermis.

After penetration, the mycelium grows intercellularly within the plant tissues. The pathogen secretes enzymes that break down cell walls, leading to the formation of necrotic lesions and subsequent structural damage.

Secondary infections occur repeatedly throughout the growing season, especially when prolonged rainy periods keep the foliage wet for extended hours, facilitating mass sporulation.

What it damages

The primary host is the garden rose (Rosa spp.). The disease affects leaves, petioles, young stems, and occasionally flower buds, severely diminishing the aesthetic value of the plant.

Severe infestations lead to premature defoliation. The loss of leaves weakens the plant significantly, reducing its ability to store carbohydrates, which compromises its survival during the winter months.

In nursery settings, this disease can cause substantial economic losses by reducing the vigor of rose bushes, making them less marketable and less resilient to transplanting stress.

By interfering with photosynthesis, the disease stunts the overall growth of the bush. It also reduces the number of flowering buds, resulting in sparse blooms during the season.

Infected stems often develop cracked, rough bark. This damage can become a pathway for secondary bacterial infections, further exacerbating the decline of the plant.

Signs of infestation

Initial symptoms consist of small, circular spots on the upper leaf surface that are purple or dark brown. Over time, the centers of these spots turn a light, ashy gray color.

The spots are often surrounded by a distinct, dark reddish or purple border. In mature lesions, the dead tissue may dry out and fall away, resulting in a shot-hole appearance.

Lesions on young shoots appear as slightly sunken, elongated ulcers. As the infection progresses, the bark in these areas may become rough, scaly, and deeply cracked.

In humid conditions, a velvety, grayish-white or brownish layer may be visible on the surface of the lesions; this is the conidial mass, which contains the spores of the fungus.

  • Circular spots with dark borders.
  • Light, ash-colored centers of leaf lesions.
  • Early defoliation and leaf drop.
  • Sunken ulcers on young stems.
  • Velvety fungal sporulation during wet weather.

Control measures

Sanitation is the cornerstone of control. Gardeners must prune away and destroy all infected canes and clear away all fallen leaves from the soil surface to remove overwintering inoculum.

Improving air circulation around the plants is essential. Proper spacing and regular pruning help the foliage dry out faster after rain, making the environment unfavorable for fungal growth.

Chemical control involves the use of copper-based fungicides or systemic options such as triazoles or strobilurins. Preventive spraying should start early in the spring, especially in regions with high seasonal rainfall.

When watering, always aim for the base of the plant rather than spraying the foliage. Avoiding overhead irrigation prevents the conditions necessary for the germination of fungal spores.

Regular inspection of the garden allows for the early detection of localized spots. Immediate removal of affected leaves can prevent a full-scale outbreak throughout the rose bed.
