The fungus is characterized by its dark, septate hyphae and conidia that are typically curved or bent. The name "verruculosa" refers to the distinctively warted or rough surface of its spores, which can be observed under higher magnification.

As a facultative parasite, this organism can switch between saprotrophic and pathogenic modes. This versatility allows it to survive in soil and on decaying organic matter for extended periods, waiting for favorable host conditions.

The pathogen is highly adaptable to temperature fluctuations and humidity levels, making it a persistent resident in many agricultural soils globally, especially in tropical and warm temperate regions.

Correct identification often requires isolating the fungus on nutrient media, such as potato dextrose agar (PDA), to observe colony morphology and sporulation patterns, distinguishing it from related species like C. lunata.

Curvularia verruculosa affects numerous important crops, including wheat, maize, sorghum, and rice, causing significant yield losses. It is particularly noted for causing foliage spots, seedling blight, and root rot.

Infection in cereal crops often results in leaf spot diseases, which decrease the photosynthetic surface area. This impairment limits energy production, directly resulting in reduced grain filling and poor grain quality.

A diagnostic sign in humid conditions is the presence of a velvety, olivaceous-to-black fungal mass on the surface of the lesions. This mass is composed of the mycelia and abundant conidia of the pathogen.

Stems of affected plants may exhibit dark streaks or lesions near the soil line, which can weaken the structural integrity of the plant and cause lodging, especially in windy conditions.
