Coniella fragariae is a fungal pathogen belonging to the phylum Ascomycota. It is the causal agent of Coniella blight or leaf spot in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa).
The fungus produces pycnidia, which are asexual fruiting bodies that appear as tiny black dots on the infected plant tissue. These pycnidia contain numerous conidia that act as the primary inoculums for disease spread.
The pathogen overwinters as mycelium and pycnidia in infected debris and soil, allowing it to persist in the field from one season to the next.
Transmission occurs through splashing water (rain or overhead irrigation), contaminated tools, and infected nursery stock, which is the primary driver of its spread between regions.
Environmental factors such as high humidity and moderate temperatures (20–25°C) are critical for the rapid development of the fungus and the production of infective spores.
What it damages
The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated strawberry. It infects leaves, petioles, runners, flower stalks, and fruits, causing significant yield losses in commercial fields.
The disease reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, leading to weakened growth, stunted development, and reduced overall plant vigor.
When flower stalks and developing fruits are affected, they may wither, rot, or become unmarketable, significantly impacting the grower's economic return.
Infection compromises the plant's natural defenses, making it more susceptible to secondary attacks by other pathogens like Botrytis cinerea.
Nursery operations are particularly vulnerable, as the movement of infected daughter plants spreads the pathogen to clean fields, creating long-term management challenges.
Signs of infestation
Initial symptoms include small, dark purple to reddish-brown spots on the leaves, which gradually expand into larger, brownish-grey lesions with a distinct dark border.
As the disease progresses, black pycnidia become visible in the center of the necrotic spots, often arranged in concentric circles or scattered across the lesion surface.
Infection of petioles and runners manifests as elongated, sunken lesions that can cause tissue collapse and reduced nutrient flow within the plant.
Fruit symptoms appear as dark, spreading spots that lead to soft rot, often covering the surface with fungal spores under moist conditions.

Control measures

Management of the microclimate is essential; maintaining proper plant spacing and ensuring good ventilation helps reduce the high humidity levels favored by the fungus.
Preventive fungicide applications may be necessary during periods of high precipitation, focusing on the critical growth stages before flowering and after harvest.
Routine scouting of the field allows for the early detection of the pathogen, enabling the isolation or removal of affected plants before the infection becomes widespread.
