Veles

The spring barley variety 'Veles' is a mid-season brewing barley intended for cultivation in the Central, Volga-Vyatsky, Central Black Earth, and Middle Volga regions of Russia. It is recommended for growing in the Nizhny Novgorod, Belgorod, and Tambov regions. The variety's vegetation period is 73-87 days, and it matures 1-3 days earlier than the Gonar variety. The plant is of medium height with a semi-prostrate bush, cylindrical loose ear, and large grain weighing 44-51 g per 1000 grains. The ear has a medium wax coating, and the awns are longer than the ear with an anthocyanin coloration at the tips of medium intensity.

The yield of the 'Veles' variety, according to the results of state variety trials in the Volga-Vyatsky and Central Black Earth regions, averages 38.1 centners per hectare (c/ha), which exceeds the standard average by 2.8 c/ha. In certain regions, such as the Nizhny Novgorod, Belgorod, and Tambov regions, the increase over the standard reaches 4.3-6.5 c/ha, and the maximum yield was recorded at the level of 73.9 c/ha in the Lipetsk region. The variety has moderate resistance to loose smut but is susceptible to helminthosporiosis and is highly susceptible to powdery smut and root rots. Resistance to lodging and drought is somewhat inferior to the Gonar variety.

The main advantage of the 'Veles' variety is its brewing purpose, which makes it in demand for the production of quality malt. External characteristics and high yield ensure its competitiveness in growing regions. It should be noted that the preparation named 'Veles', containing thiabendazole and deltamethrin, does not belong to this barley variety and is intended for the protection of agricultural crops from pests.
