Clivia is a decorative evergreen indoor plant from the Amaryllidaceae family, native to subtropical regions of South Africa. It attracts attention with its bright, large flowers arranged in clusters, which may range in color from yellow and orange to red. The leaves of clivia are dark green, long, and tufted, dense and succulent, giving the plant distinctive decorative appeal even during its dormant period. The height of a flowering bush reaches about 60 centimeters, and each flowering stem produces 10 to 20 bell-shaped flowers.
Clivia prefers bright but diffused light, so it is best placed near east or west-facing windows, avoiding direct sunlight. The optimal temperature for active growth is 20-25°C, and during autumn and the beginning of the dormant period, it is recommended to keep it at a lower temperature of 10-14°C. During this period, watering is significantly reduced or stopped to stimulate subsequent abundant flowering. In spring, when flower stems appear, the temperature is raised to 18-20°C, and watering is increased using warm water. Air humidity is not particularly important for clivia.
The plant is not demanding in soil, preferring light, well-drained substrates, for example, a mixture of lawn and leaf soil with sand or compost with peat and sand. It is important to ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogging, as the succulent roots of clivia are sensitive to overwatering and may rot. Clivia is transplanted carefully, only when necessary, when roots no longer fit in the pot, preferably by repotting into a slightly larger container. Fertilization is applied during the active growth and flowering period, avoiding excess nitrogen, which promotes leaf growth at the expense of flowering.
