WSS 1

WSS‑1 – a dwarf rootstock obtained through hybridization of wild cherry (Cerasus fruticosa) with Lannesiana cherry (Cerasus lannesiana). Cherry trees on this rootstock reach a height approximately 50 % less than that of standard seedlings, making them suitable for cultivation in limited spaces and at high planting densities. The rootstock is compatible with all cherry and sweet cherry varieties; fruiting begins as early as 2‑3 years after planting, with a productive period lasting from 15 to 18 years.

Key characteristics of WSS‑1 include good resistance to adverse soil conditions: it tolerates dense, waterlogged soils and drought, and exhibits moderate root hardiness (–12 °C). The absence of suckers and high resistance to root rots, bacterial canker, and leaf diseases make this rootstock particularly valuable for growers seeking long-term productivity with minimal intervention.

The tree's appearance is characterized by slow growth with an open canopy. Shoots are straight, chestnut-brown, and hairless; leaves are oval, long-acuminate, green with a doubly serrated margin. Fruits are small, dark-red berries that give the bush an ornamental appearance even during non-fruiting periods. Thanks to compact growth and resilience to various stress factors, WSS‑1 is an excellent choice for commercial orchards and private gardens where a reliable and economical solution for growing cherries and sweet cherries is required.
