Nicandra physalodes Akvarel

A natural repellent with an aesthetic flair

Nicandra physalodes 'Aquarelle' is a rare blend of functional utility and ornamental beauty. Unlike most decorative plants that only serve visual purposes, this variety from RosNIIPTI SK and the Saratov State University of Genetics, Biotechnology and Engineering acts as a "living shield" in the garden. The key feature of 'Aquarelle' is its unique chemical composition, which acts as a natural deterrent against flies and various other insect pests, making it an essential tool for organic farming and integrated pest management.

Visual traits and cultivation

The plant grows into a robust bush featuring elegant lilac-colored flowers with a striking white center. The fruits of 'Aquarelle' are spherical, giving the plant a tidy and intriguing appearance even as the seed pods mature. Originators from the N.I. Vavilov Saratov State University and RosNIIPTI SK have ensured high genetic stability, allowing the cultivar to be used effectively both as a standalone decorative piece and as a protective perimeter border around vegetable beds.

Who is 'Aquarelle' for?

• Permaculture enthusiasts: If you are looking to minimize chemical insecticide use, planting Nicandra around the edges of your garden creates an effective physical and biological barrier.
• Landscape designers: The unique fruit structure and gentle color palette make it an excellent addition to "natural garden" style borders.
• Amateur gardeners: Its high adaptability to different soil types ensures that it can thrive in various climates with minimal maintenance.

It is important to note that Nicandra is a vigorous grower, so keep an eye on self-seeding. However, this same resilience and resistance to environmental stress are exactly what make 'Aquarelle' a reliable choice for those who appreciate practical, multi-purpose garden plantings.
