Flax Soyuz

Soyuz Flax: Balancing Oil and Fiber Production

Developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Bast Fiber Crops, the Soyuz variety represents a strategic advancement in Russian flax breeding. A dedicated team of researchers—G. N. Grigorieva, N. S. Sotsardovskaya, and L. S. Atrashkevich—sought to create a versatile plant that would bridge the gap between high-yield oil production and high-quality fiber requirements. With the intellectual property held by the Smolensk branch of the center, this variety has established its reputation as a dual-purpose crop.

Why Soyuz fits the modern market

For agricultural enterprises, the Soyuz variety is a hedge against commodity price volatility. By selecting a variety that excels in two distinct segments, farmers can optimize their revenue streams regardless of market trends:

• Oil Content: The variety exhibits a stable oil content of 38–42 %, making it highly competitive for crushing facilities.
• Fiber Utility: Unlike specialized oil-seed flax, Soyuz provides high-quality bast fiber, allowing farmers to enter the textile or technical fiber markets simultaneously.

The market position of Soyuz is defined by its reliability and the scientific pedigree behind its development. It is designed for producers who require a flexible crop capable of adapting to complex processing needs. By integrating oil and fiber traits into a single genetic package, Soyuz minimizes the need for separate sowings of flax types, allowing for more efficient land management and a more robust bottom line at the end of the season.
