SLASTYENA

Elderberry 'Slastyena' is a fast-growing multi-stemmed shrub growing up to 2–3 meters in height. Throughout the season, it displays bright decorative qualities thanks to its dense clusters of juicy berries and lush blooming in late April–early May. The fruits have a diameter of 8–15 mm, a bluish-black hue, tender skin, and a waxy bloom; they typically form 6–12 pieces per cluster. Externally, the berries resemble blackcurrants but possess a sweet-sour taste with a sugar content of about 13%. Due to the high levels of ascorbic acid and tannins in the bark, they are valued as a nutritious food product.

The plant is characterized by high resistance to climatic stresses: flowers withstand spring frosts down to -5°C, and the shrub itself endures winter frosts down to -30°C without the need for sheltering. This makes the elderberry 'Slastyena' an ideal choice for gardens and cottage plots with harsh weather conditions. The plant is also resistant to diseases and pests, has good drought tolerance, and is suitable for planting in open, sunny locations on light, moisture-rich soil.

For growing 'Slastyena', it is recommended to plant bushes at a distance of 1–2 meters from each other to ensure adequate lighting. Propagation is done through cuttings and layers; when planting, it is beneficial to add fertilizer, and regular watering increases yield. The fruits usually ripen in late May to early autumn, after which they can be harvested in several stages until June. Unpicked berries do not fall until October and often become food for birds, adding additional decorative value to the bush.
