Christaleff cucumber, also known as lemon cucumber or Crystal Apple, is a unique variety with round fruits resembling lemons or tangerines in shape and color. Its distinctive feature is crystal-clear water contained within the flesh, which gives the vegetable a crunchy texture and slightly sweet taste. The fruits are adorned with small stripes and spots, and contain fisetin — an anti-inflammatory flavonoid that supports cognitive function. This variety was developed by English breeders and combines all the best qualities of ordinary cucumbers.
The plant features a strong stem that can grow up to 5 meters long, which is why it is sometimes called a cucumber tree. Christaleff cucumber is warm-loving and prefers temperatures in the range of 25-30°C, growing well in light, well-fertilized soils. Sowing seeds is recommended in March–April for seedlings or in May–June directly into the ground, maintaining a spacing of 50–60 cm between plants. Watering should be moderate until flowering begins and more abundant during flowering, with water preferably applied at the root to avoid leaf sunburn. Important care practices include soil loosening and weed removal.
Fruiting begins 30–40 days after the appearance of the first shoots, and harvesting occurs approximately two months later. Under favorable conditions, the variety can yield a high harvest — 10–12 kg per season and more. Fruits are harvested using pruning shears or scissors, which helps preserve the quality of the vegetables. Christaleff cucumber is frost-resistant and continues to bear fruit until the end of the season. It is widely used in culinary applications and for decorative purposes, thanks to its unusual appearance and beneficial properties.
